Direct primary care removes insurance from the everyday doctor-patient relationship. Here are the questions people ask most before joining, answered plainly.
Direct primary care is a membership model where you pay a flat monthly fee directly to your primary care practice instead of routing everyday care through insurance. In exchange you get unlimited visits, direct access to your provider, longer appointments, and transparent pricing on labs and medications. It’s most powerful paired with a high-deductible or catastrophic insurance plan that covers emergencies and hospitalization.
DPC memberships typically run from roughly $50 to $150 per month depending on age and plan. At Homesteady Health, individual memberships start at $49/month for ages 3–18, $74 for 19–24, $99 for 25–57, and $129 for 58+, with couple and family plans that lower the per-person cost and additional children at just $26/month. There are no copays and no surprise bills on top of the membership.
No — it complements it. DPC covers your everyday primary care; you’ll still want insurance (often a lower-cost, high-deductible plan) for emergencies, hospital stays, specialists, and surgery. Many members save money overall by pairing an affordable DPC membership with a cheaper high-deductible plan instead of a costly low-deductible one.
No. You can join Homesteady Health with or without insurance — the membership stands on its own. Uninsured members get affordable, predictable primary care; insured members get direct-access care their plan doesn’t otherwise provide, plus discounted labs and transparent medication pricing.

Founder & Nurse Practitioner · Men's Health & TRT
Matthew founded Homesteady Health to practice medicine without the clock and the profit-over-patient mindset of corporate care. That’s the whole point of the membership model: flat, honest pricing and the time to actually know his patients. Across more than 25 years he’s practiced family medicine in the Alaskan bush, worked trauma and the ER in fast-paced Philadelphia, and built urgent-care clinics there. Today he serves on the board of Region 2 of the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York, where he was named NP of the Year in 2025.
He also lives the active Finger Lakes lifestyle — running, grappling, basketball, coaching, hunting, fishing, and time out on Cayuga Lake. When you join Homesteady Health, you’re not getting an 800 number and a rotating cast of providers. You’re getting one local practitioner who’ll still be here next year, and who you can reach directly.
